How to make the Boylston Bra from stretch fabrics

The Boylston Bra pattern from Orange Lingerie is intended for stable non-stretch fabrics except for the back band piece. This doesn’t stop you from using a stretch material to make one, it just requires a few extra steps and a little extra material. In the one pictured I really wanted to use this metallic foil stretch lycra fabric, especially with the made fabric straps I thought it would look really good. In order to use all stretch fabrics for the Boylston bra you have to line all the pieces except for the back band with a stable fabric such as sheer cup lining.

Boylston Bra Materials

All laid out ready to cut

  1. You will need extra lining fabric from what the pattern states. A half yard should be plenty for most sizes.

  2. Cut out pieces 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 from both stretch fabric and lining fabric in corresponding left right formats as in the pattern. (Regular directions do not include 5 and 6)

  3. Strap Options: you can use regular strapping if you do not want to do the fabric straps. You can also line your straps in a single layer (half the pattern piece) since it is folded over or use twill tape to stabilize the inside of the strap.

  4. When sewing the frame together you will have extra lining pieces for the outer frame that are not included in the pattern. These can be sewn using the stitch and flip method or just each piece together since it gets covered by the elastic anyway. It depends on how clean of a finish you’d like to have.

  5. Sew the rest of the bra as normal. Optionally you can use your stretch fabric on your back band with power net.
